Die Ringvorlesung “Research at Risk” geht in die zweite Runde. Die internationale und interdisziplinäre Reihe wird vom gleichnamigen Arbeitskreis aus Medien- und Theaterwissenschaftler:innen verschiedener Universitäten, organisiert und konzentriert sich in diesem Semester auf die Gefahr, die “Fossiler Autoritarismus und Klimakatastrophe” für Forschung und Forscher:innen darstellen.

The climate catastrophe and the war against Ukraine are bringing the problem of fossil fuels to a head. The extraction, consumption, and trade of fossil fuels are not only threatening to our ecosystem on a planetary scale, but our social and democratic orders as well. Concepts such as “petromasculinity” (Cara New Daggett), “petrofascism” (Andreas Malm/Zetkin Kollektiv), “pollution as colonialism” (Max Liboiron) or climate racism (Black Earth Collective, Matthias Quent et al.) make the interconnectedness of demands for climate justice and intersectional critique blatantly obvious. Not only do Petroregimes, rooted in colonial regimes, that manifested over the last century persist in contradiction to a majority of scientific ways of knowing, they also form – or are enmeshed in – structures of power that threaten the conditions of free and democratic research and art as well as the security and rights of researchers, artists and activists. To discuss the various dimensions of state, colonial, or patriarchal power and violence in their relationship to fossil fuels and petro-industries, we invite international thinkers from the humanities and sciences, journalists, artists and filmmakers. This second iteration of our lecture series “Research at Risk” thereby focusses on specific structures that, while also producing concrete threats, above all must be considered the (indirect) cause of war and forced migration. The interests of state and non-state actors in the preservation of fossil-fueled ways of life and production play a crucial role in these structures. The dangers of petro authoritarianism are not only directed at individual researchers, but also at research in its democratic potential as a place of knowledge exchange and criticism, including questions about the (extractivist) conditions under which research takes place, what is recognized as such and what is not. How are collaborations between science, journalism, art and activism possible? How can we enable knowledge in feminist, anti-racist or decolonial research that acts and calls for action?

Die Klimakatastrophe und der Krieg gegen die Ukraine spitzen die Problematik von fossilen Brennstoffen immer weiter zu. Förderung, Verbrauch und Handel mit fossilen Brennstoffen bedrohen nicht nur die Erde in planetarischem Ausmaß, sondern auch soziale und demokratische Ordnungen. Konzepte wie “Petro Maskulinität” (Cara New Daggett), “Petro Faschismus” (Andreas Malm/Zetkin Kollektiv), ”Verschmutzung als Kolonialismus” (Max Liboiron) oder Klimarassismus (Back Earth Collective, Matthias Quent et al.) machen die Verbundenheit von Forderungen nach Klimagerechtigkeit und Anliegen intersektionaler Kritik offensichtlich. Petroregime, mit ihrer kolonialen Geschichte existieren heute nicht nur entgegen einer Mehrheit wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisweisen über die Klimakatatstrophe, sie bilden auch Machtformen aus – oder sind in diese verstrickt -, welche die Bedingungen von freier Forschung, die Sicherheit und die Rechte von Forschenden und Aktivis:innen bedrohen. Im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung laden wir internationale Denker:innen aus den Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften, Journalist:innen, Künstler:innen und Filmemacher:innen ein, die verschiedenen Dimensionen kolonialer oder patriarchaler Macht und Gewalt in ihrem Verhältnis zu Fossilen Energien und Petro-Industrien zu diskutieren. In dieser zweiten Runde unserer “Research at Risk”- Ringvorlesung wird der Fokus damit auf spezifischen Strukturen liegen, die zwar auch konkrete Bedrohungslagen ausbilden, vor allem aber zur (indirekten) Ursache von Krieg und erzwungener Flucht werden. Zu diesen Strukturen gehören die Interessen verschiedener staatlicher und nichtstaatlicher Akteur:innen am Erhalt fossil-betriebener Lebens- und Produktionsweisen. Die Gefahr, die von dieser Gemengelage ausgeht, richtet sich nicht nur auf einzelne Forscher:innen, sondern auch auf Forschung und Kunst in ihrem demokratischen Potential, als Ort des Wissensaustausches und der Kritik. Zu diesem Potenzial gehört auch immer wieder zu Fragen, unter welchen (extraktivistischen) Bedingungen Forschung geschieht, was als solche anerkannt wird und was nicht. Wie sind Kooperationen zwischen Wissenschaft, Journalismus, Kunst und Aktivismus in der fossil verursachten Klimakrise möglich? Wie können wir in feministischen, antirassistischen oder dekolonialen Recherchen Wissen ermöglichen, das handelt und zum Handeln aufruft?
