Title of the Dissertation

Between Bios and Zoë: Media Structures of the Long-Term Documentary Film. (Working Title)

Project Description

The long-term documentary film is a genre or subgenre that emerged in the 1960s with the series Die Kinder von Golzow (Winfried and Barbara Junge, DDR/DE 1961–2006) and the Up Series (Michael Apted, GB 1964–the present day), on the one hand as an experimental ordering of life and on the other as a search for new forms of documentation (Direct Cinema, Cinéma vérité). These are film life narratives covering a very long timeframe – 37 years in Private Universe (Helena Třeštíková, CR 2012), over 55 years in Michael Apted’s Up Series– and hence inquire into the concept of life in different ways. This thesis seeks firstly to examine the heterogeneity of the material from several perspectives (film and media studies, but also the life sciences) and secondly to consider the polysemy of the term ‘life’ and the relevance of vitalism for the documentary, especially the long-term documentary film. Via its iterative method and its duration, the long-term documentary film reflects biological, biographical and historical temporalities by documenting the physical process of aging, regulation of life via narratives, and technological progress and political transformations. It thereby functions as an alternative dispositive of historiography focusing not only on the life of the individual, but also on ‘life itself’, its duration, its becoming and its passing by merging the past, the present and the future. Given this complex temporality, the long-term documentary film must thus be not so much subject to the logic of biography (bios) as characterised by the tensions of what I term ‘zoëgraphy’.
